Cross country wins
DVL title

After finishing the regular season with a fine
16-2 mark, the Varsity Cross Country team first
captured the Mercer County Meet and then won
the Delaware Valley League meet for the fourth
year in a row. Coach Dean DeKok's team then
placed fourth in the Group II State Sectionals,
advancing to the Group II State Finals, where the
team finished sixteenth. Brian Gallagher, Steve
Pennington, Tom Shafer, and Dan Suthers provid-
ed the backbone of the team for the entire sea-
son, Gallagher finishing first in every regular sea-
son meet plus the League and County Meets.

The JV squad also compiled a good record, get-
ting 11 victories opposed to 5 losses. Freshman
Hillary Noden, the first female member of a male
sports team in the school's history, became the
top female runner in the state by winning the
Girls NJSIAA State Championship Meet.

very well, the Varsity soccer team finished with
a respectable 5-6-4 record. After going 0-4-3 in
the first seven games of the season, the team
turned it around and won five of its last eight
contests. Included in these five wins was an
upset victory over Lawrence and four shutouts
by senior goalie Keith Petrie. Coach William
Montagna's team was led in scoring by senior
Craig Bowers with 6 goals and 3 assists for 9
points, while junior Dave Culler was second
with 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points. The HV
defense was anchored by Petrie, who sported
an excellent goals-against average of 1.73 per
game.

The JV team, coached by Mr. Charles Harcar,
had a fine season, compiling an 11-2-2 record.
Sophomore Carlos Aramburu led the team in
scoring with 24 goals and 9 assists for 33 points,
while junior Bob Etherington recorded five
shutouts in goal.

Girls field hockey strong as ever

Co-captained by Sue Mantz and Lynn Abbott,
the Varsity Hockey team showed great momen-
tum and experience this year. For the second year
in a row, the team began their season with an
undefeated nine game streak. Hampered by inju-
ries, however, they lost their last four games and
finished the season with a 6-4-3 record. Seniors
Sue Mantz and Amy Monteleone were the high
scorers for the season.

Mrs. Paige Hoyle, in her first year of coaching,
also showed great enthusiasm for the team. She
has another good year to look forward to with
seven Varsity lettermen returning and a strong
J.V.

The J.V.s compiled a fine 9-1-2 record with Judy
Abbott leading them to many of their victories.

Wrestlers reap best season ever,
place second in Districts

Hopewell Valley's Wrestling team, coached by George Strattman, finished their best season in Ho-Vals
history with a 10-5 record. The combined individual efforts of the squad resulted in the clinching of both
League Title and Christmas Tournament. Performances by seniors; Bob Miller, Dennis Gentilin, Bob
Liana, Sandy Rice, Craig Reed, and A. R. Willey
provided many highlights throughout the season
and especially at the Districts where many placed
second or third in their weight class. Co-captains,
John Jackson and Bill Fritz, both went undefeated in
their dual matches. Bill, placing first in the Districts,
went on to score third in the Regions.

This year, the J.V.s compiled a fine 9-6 record
under the enthusiastic coaching of Mr. Paul
Krichling. Top J.V. wrestlers to have seen were Rich
DeDufor and Keith Watson who took second place
in their weight classes in the Novice Tournament.
Tony DiCoco also wrestled undefeated for the J. V.
in all of his dual matches.

finishes 9-16

This year's Varsity basketball team, guided by
Mr. Ervin "Skip" Johnson, duplicated last year's
mark by ending the season with a record of 9 wins
and 16 losses. Junior Harold Driver, the school's
all-time leading scorer with a total of 932 career
points, led the team in many statistical
departments, averaging 19.2 points and 12.3
rebounds per game. Highlighting the season for
the young Bulldogs (8 juniors and 4 sophomores)
were double victories over Jamesburg, Allen-
town, and MKSD, a third place finish in the John
F. Kennedy Invitational Christmas Tournament,
and a thrilling home overtime victory over arch-
rival Lawrence.

losses. Juniors Phil Kianka, Ken Kurisko, and Ken
Wood and sophomore Kirk Van Ness led the team
in scoring, each averaging over nine points a
game, the team outscored their foes by an
amazing total of 237 points.

.

The freshman basketball team, under tthe
direction of Mr. Len Travagline, experienced a
difficult season, compiling a record of 6 wins and
16 losses. Pete Seibert led the team all year in
scoring, averaging just over 14 points per game.
The team finished third in the Hunterdon Central
Christmas Tournament, but was eliminated in the
first round in the Trenton Junior High Christmas
Tournament.

Inexperience hampers varsity

This year's Varsity team compiled
a 5-5 record; while being the young-
est in the school's history. Two fresh-
men, Hilary Noden and Pat Kurisko,
were starters on the Varsity. They
were joined by sophomore Beth
Hawkey, junior Shelley Pennington
and senior Kim Welebir. Junior
JoAnne Stewart was first reserve and
in her first year on the Basketball
team she developed into a strong
defensive player.

Under first year coach, Mrs. Paige
Hoyle, the team was hampered by
inexperience, causing many costly
turnovers in key games. Injuries also
played a part in the team's record,
returning letterman Lynn Abbott
was unable to play because of a
broken wrist.

Hilary Noden led the scoring with
a 13 point average followed by
Shelley Pennington with a 8 point
average and Pat Kurisko with a 5
point average. With this young team
the future looks very bright for many
winning seasons.

The J.V.'s completed their season
with a 6-5 record. Lisa Ward led the
scoring with just over 4 points per
game followed by Judy Abbott with
3 points per game. With the
experience these players gained this
season they should be a major asset
to next year's Varsity.

Cheerleaders and Booster Club
lead school spirit

Working together, the cheerleading squads
and the Booster Club helped kindle spirit for the
school's athletic teams. Cheering at all soccer and
basketball games, the girls enthused the players
and fans alike. The Booster Club, directed by Mr.
Thomas Ritter, sponsored a December Pep rally,
arranged for spectators buses to away basketball
games, and kept the school informed of athletic
events the entire year.

Trackmen show strength in Running Events

The Track team proved to be strong in the
running events with returning lettermen Craig
Bowers and Brian Gallagher continuing along
their winning ways. Steve Embly, Dave Gazda and
Jeff and Don Giovacchini provided the nucleus
for the field events. Under coach Ron Hilton the
relay teams are considered the best in the area.

Golf team led by underclassmen

The 1972 Golf team compiled a dismal record
of 5 wins and 11 losses. Led by Joe Midiri, who
sported an individual record of 10-2 with a 4 1.7
stroke per round average, the team took third
in the league match and sixth in the county
match.

This year's team was made up of many un-
derclassmen. Mrs. Shirley Rosser coached the
team over a nineteen match schedule and the
post-season league, county and district match-
es. Senior Bob Dixon, a new addition to this
year's team, joined Midiri as the team's two top
players.

Seniors dominate Baseball Team

Due to an anemic hitting attack, last year's
Varsity baseball team compiled a poor record of
seven wins and sixteen losses. Eight of last year's
lettermen returned this year, forming the nucleus
of a squad that included twelve seniors. Ace lefty
Tom Hoagland sparked the mound staff, while
second-baseman Mark DiGaetano led the infield
defense for Coach Stan Davis' team.

finishes best ever

The 1972 edition of the boys tennis team
comprised an excellent record of 12 wins
against only 2 losses Rick Katz (72), playing in
the first singles position, led the team with an
individual mark of 11-3. Senior Rich Golden
teamed up with Mark Kirby (72) in the first
doubles position to win 10 matches out of 13.

This year's team was ignited by seniors Gold-
en and Bob Miller. Coached by Mr. Harald Ev-
ersheim, the team played through a 16 game
regular-season schedule and the Mercer
County match.

Second year Track Team improving

Under the direction of first year coach Walt Krichl-
ing, the girls' track team greatly improved their skills.

With only one senior on last year's squad, the return-
ing lettermen provide the bulk for a winning season.

You, the Jury

141

142

In memory and with memories of Pam
You Can Smell the Flower

You can sit and smell a flower,
You can sit and write a poem,
You can walk through fields endlessly,
Without ever finding a home.

You must have faith to have a home,
So that you can smell the flower
Which you pick from your backyard,
That you tend for many an hour.

Tools of love are people and faith,
Caring and having faith in each other,
Tools of a garden are metal and wood,
And you are the garden's mother.

So now that you have your family and home,
And you tend to your backyard garden,
Remember that love and faith go together,
And you smell the flower from your garden.

Pam Davis

In trying to produce a truly individual and creative yearbook we found ourselves needing many imagi-
native people. At this time we would like to take the opportunity to give the recognition due to the fol-
lowing people who, in our time of need, gave of themselves

The 1973 CENTRALOGUE staff: editors, staff workers, sales-advertising staff,

Mr. Lou Esposito, an extremely patient American Yearbook Company representative,

Mr. Ray Krupa for all the time, work, and guidance he offered us,

All the aspiring young printmakers who supplied their works for the section dividers, especially David
Smith for our cover,

Our student photography staff for all the long hours they spent in the darkroom,

Lorstan-thomas Studios for their photography,

Mr. Michael Lovero, Mr. David Sipe, and their staff,

Mr. Martin Harmon, Mr. Michael Arcieri, and the faculty and staff for their understanding and
cooperation,

The Custodial staff for letting us use the building when we needed it,

The Advertisers and Patrons,

And most important, our thanks to the students of Hopewell Valley CHS about whom, for whom, and
by whom, this book was made.

Susan Mauer, Ellen Dussourd
